WHAT WE DO

_

The Fostering Champions Independent Living program will consist of Independent Life Skills Training/Classes. These classes are scheduled at different times during the week. Youth will work with their caseworker/advocates to customize classes that compliment the individual’s life skill needs and flows with their education or work schedule.

Each Class occurs for 90 mins, one time a week for a month. If all six competencies are needed, the total course of all the competencies will encompass a 6 month period. Since this is a customized program and not one size fits all the length of the program can be from 1 to 6 months as an example. These initial life skills will help to develop competencies for a successful transition into adulthood. We have prioritized the following competencies in our program to help empower resilient youth to be successful.

  • Gainful Employment

Help youth develop a resume, apply for jobs, seek career opportunities, interview skills, wardrobe and explore options for short and long term employment

  • Banking

Collaborate with community banks to learn about checking, savings, debit cards, credit cards, writing checks, online banking and bill pay.

  • Finances/budgeting

Identify expenses for living independently, Income sources, and how to budget to be successful. Youth will learn about savings, purchasing cars, school expenses/college. Students will set up a budget so they can purchase items needed to live independently while attending the program.

  • Driving

Students will identify a resource for taking drivers education classes. FCILP will foster and support this process and see through until completion during class time. FCILP will review the drivers education booklet provided by DMV during in-house-class time. (Students must have approval of their guardian/caseworker/referring agency to participate) The cost of the program selected is separate if from an outside agency.

  • Cooking

The classes will explore all cultures to allow for diversity in food menu choices. FCILP will host cooking classes, to allow hands-on experience. Youth will explore utilizing coupons, EBT card, Debit cards and healthy food choices and sustainability.

  • Life Coaching

Life Coaching is available to help youth dive into their trauma, turn it into a resilient, and powerful driving force to success. A certified Life Coach will provide this service individually with the youth.

SAFE HOUSING

_

Independent Living Program (TILP DCSS defines as Transitional Independent Living Program)Currently in Planning Stages

Fostering Champions diligently works with stakeholders to meet industry requirements to eradicate housing insecurity and instability. We will continue to partner with the Foster Care system to ensure our youth who are homeless and in need of safe housing will receive support services for a better quality of life. This program provides temporary residential placement and supportive assistance to current foster children, those aging out of the system, and alumni transitioning out of homelessness and securing housing assistance.

Additionally, FCILP will prepare them to transition to stable, permanent housing while setting them up for financial independence as they strive towards being productive citizens.

PHYSICAL HEALTH/MENTAL HEALTH ALTERNATIVES

_

Assist youth with following physical and mental health techniques recommended by their counselors, therapist or mental health advisors. Youth will explore Yoga, Zumba, strength training, equine therapy, and art therapy etc. as recommended.

EMPOWERMENT-SOCIALS

_

(Structured and unstructured) empowering youth with little resources through education, employment, health services, and giving them a sense of identity and community in which they can thrive and grow. Examples: drop in hours to hang out with other foster youth aging out of the system and alumni to relate, networking, peer engagement, positive behavior modifications through peer mentors, cultural diversity learning opportunities etc.

SCHOLARSHIPS
